The Teacher in a NT church
posted on 26 March 2009 in GeneralOver the past month or so, I have given some biblical guidelines in regards to the Pastor, deacons, and teachers in our Wednesday evening Bible studies. I feel it would be helpful to go to the Bible to find the responsibilities and requirements to fulfill such positions. We will look at the teacher first.
The Teacher (In a local New Testament Baptist Church)
by Pastor Jack Cox
When Jesus ordained the church, He appointed two church offices: The Pastor and The Deacon. However, He also spoke about teachers. While the job of a teacher is not like the job of a Pastor or even a deacon, it is a duty to be taken seriously and prayerfully.
In Ephesians 4:11, speaking of the church, the Lord said He “gave some apostles; and some prophets and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and TEACHERS;”
1. While teaching is primarily the responsibility of the PASTOR, it is evident that he cannot do ALL the teaching in the church.
2. The teacher is a close associate to the PASTOR who is ultimately responsible for all the teaching of the church. It is in the “OVERSEEING” ministry that the Pastor administers the Sunday School and other teaching ministries.
3. Most of the qualifications and duties of a DEACON could easily be applied to the teacher.
4. Men are to teach MEN. Men should, if possible also teach teen boys.
5. The Bible says, “But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the MAN, but to be in silence” (I Timothy 2:12). Before God gave this verse He said, “Let the WOMAN learn in silence with all subjection” (I Timothy 2:11).
6. Women can learn and teach other ladies (and children). But when it comes to teaching men, God forbids it!
7. God does not call women to be theologians. In Revelation 2:19, God condemns the church at THYATIRA for allowing a woman to teach His servants referring to the MEN as evident in the verse. God called the woman “JEZEBEL.”
8. Teachers should “study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, RIGHTLY dividing the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15).
Teaching is a SERIOUS opportunity that requires prayerful commitment. If you are currently teaching, I trust you will be encouraged by the biblical viewpoints given. If you are considering serving the Lord in the area of teaching, this will be an aid in knowing what God expects of you.
